A Chicago City Council public safety committee is set to vote on a proposed teen curfew ordinance introduced by 2nd Ward Alderman Brian Hopkins. The ordinance would allow Police Superintendent Larry Snelling or district commanders to impose “snap curfews” with at least 30 minutes’ notice. The measure is intended to address teen takeovers and could apply city-wide. Hopkins had previously suggested an 8 p.m. curfew in downtown but shifted to this proposal after discussions with the mayor and police department. Supporters cite public safety concerns; critics warn the measure could lead to profiling and misuse. The vote is scheduled for 10 a.m.
