CHICAGO (CBS) — Students will face mandatory testing for drugs and also alcohol this school year, at one northwest suburban high school.
Concerns about underage drinking prompted St. Viator High School in Arlington Heights to add alcohol to its random drug test policy.
The test will use hair samples to determine whether a student has used alcohol in the past 90 days.
St. Viator administrators say random drug testing of students has been ongoing since 2007, and less than 1 percent have come back positive.

A flood of more than 300 fighting students poured out of Proviso East High School on their last day of school May 31 and carried into the streets of Maywood for several hours, police said.
At least 10 students were arrested, including a girl allegedly using two chef’s knives after being beaten down by other students, and the fight required more than 40 officers from neighboring agencies including Oak Park, Forest Park, Westchester, Bellwood and Broadview, according to the Forest Park Review.
Three students were taken to Loyola Medical Center with minor injuries, including one girl who was struck over the eye with a lock, the Review reported.

Sheila Hemphill and her son, Coleman Hemphill, on the dangers of smart meters and the legal strategy activists can use on a wide variety of issues. Curtis Bennett, Chief Science Officer, Thermografix Consulting, talks about expert testimony he gave on the health effects of smart meters.
BRADY — In October, the city council of this Central Texas town voted unanimously to purchase advanced electric meters, known as smart meters, for the city-owned electric utility. But some residents resisted, and the smart meter vote played a large role in last weekend’s recall of the city’s mayor and the electoral defeat of two council members. Voters here passed a referendum last weekend to enshrine in the city charter the right of residents to refuse the installation of smart meters on their property. Sheila Hemphill, an organizer of the effort, called the victory her “San Jacinto.” The reaction in Brady could signal a shift in the debate over smart meters, which collect detailed data on electricity use and transmit it to the utility using radio frequencies. A raft of bills were introduced during the legislative session that would allow individuals to keep their old meters for free, but all have faltered. Local resistance to smart meters, however, appears to be rising.
The Illinois legislature agreed Friday to allow people to carry concealed guns, which if signed into law would make the state the last in the country to allow the public possession of concealed firearms.
The compromise plan by the House and Senate followed a federal appeals ruling that stated Illinois’ concealed carry ban is unconstitutional and that the state must change it by June 9.
Gov. Pat Quinn, a Democrat, has not said whether he will sign the legislation into law. However, the bill has enough votes in the legislature to override a gubernatorial veto.
The Illinois Ag Dept. illegally seized privately owned bees from renowned naturalist, Terrence Ingram, without providing him with a search warrant and before the court hearing on the matter, reports Prairie Advocate News.
Behind the obvious violations of his Constitutional rights is Monsanto. Ingram was researching Roundup’s effects on bees, which he’s raised for 58 years. “They ruined 15 years of my research,” he told Prairie Advocate, by stealing most of hisstock.

Chicago, IL– Little Village has witnessed the surge of gang war and the outlandish destructive behavior of gang violence between two rival gangs that has left many families grief- stricken. Just recently there has been a severe infiltration in the Western part of Little Village by one of the rival gangs. Recently some brazen videos were downloaded to show the brinksmanship of one gang and posted on You Tube for the world to see. The recent videos are very disturbing and have angered the residents in the community of over 100,000 in population. The video links on You Tube are the following: Drake 27 Latin Kings; Ghetto side 24 Latin Kings.
With implications of many shootings on the outskirts of Little Village were gangs have had an outlet into another jurisdiction, Chicago land community activist Raul Montes, Jr. has asked for the help and collaboration of the Town of Cicero for a better intelligence system and communication between both Cicero and Chicago. Cicero President Larry Dominick has responded “I sympathize with our neighbors to the east and when Mr. Montes asked if we could help, I had to say yes. Even though we technically have no jurisdiction in Chicago, we can still coordinate our efforts with the Chicago Police and share ideas with Little Village residents to help them be more successful in protecting their children and fighting street gangs,” Dominick said. Montes states there should be some accountability on these explicit videos and more vigilance to a community that has been put on a back burner and the violence downplayed wher children are at risk.
Cicero’s Gang Crimes Unit, and officials have agreed to hold a meeting with the residents of Little Village and Chicago Police to develop strategies to improve safety in Little Village and also develop collaborations to share information about street gangs and improve cooperation among law enforcement agencies to curb and solve crime. On Wednesday evening, Cicero Police, Chicago Police, other law enforcement agencies and residents in Little Village are holding a community forum and press conference to collaborate and develop strategies to be effective to combat the gang war in both communities. The Cook County Sheriff’s office and public officials and been invited to the event.
