The People’s Cafe is open on Belmont Avenue in Avondale, serving coffee, pastries and empanadas from the storefront that previously housed Cultura Cafe. The cafe is a partnership between building owner Mary Sommers and Dominique Betancourt of Zemi Coffee Cart, whose family has roots in Puerto Rican coffee farming; co-operators Nicholas McMillan and Coco Wallace round out the team.
The menu centers on coffee from Zemi Coffee Cart alongside pastries and empanadas. Beyond counter service, the cafe makes its space available for community gatherings, meetings, workshops, art and music events, reflecting a stated mission of building connection in the neighborhood.
The People’s Cafe is open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with evening space available by appointment for meetings and events.
