The Congress Plaza Hotel Anchors the South Loop Across from Grant Park

The Congress Plaza Hotel sits at 520 S. Michigan Ave. in the South Loop, directly across from Grant Park. The hotel traces its address back to 1893, when the building opened as the Auditorium Annex; it took the name Congress Hotel in 1911 for its location on Congress Street, according to the hotel’s own history page.

Today the property has more than 800 guest rooms, including lakeview and cityview suites and family suites, booked through a 24-hour front desk. On-site dining includes Gazebo, a breakfast spot serving eggs, pancakes and French toast made to order; Rafael’s, serving lunch and dinner with views toward the park, including burgers, soups, salads and steak; and Congress Lounge, an evening bar with pub food, cocktails, wine and beer.

The hotel’s history page also notes the building once housed Peacock Alley, an underground passage to the neighboring Auditorium Hotel, and a ballroom in its south tower that was among the first in the country to use air conditioning. It lists several U.S. presidents, including William Howard Taft and Theodore Roosevelt, among its past guests.
