Just a few inches separated life and death for Mahogany Myers on Tuesday morning.

Myers, 27, was pulling out of the parking lot at her favorite breakfast spot in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood when she heard gunfire and ducked. Seconds later, a bullet shattered the driver’s side window of her blue Ford Mustang, raining glass on her back and head.

“At first I thought I was going to die,” said Myers, who crawled several feet to the restaurant’s door and took cover in the entryway as the gunfire continued.

Witnesses said the chaotic scene unfolded about 9:30 a.m. in the 7400 block of South Vincennes Avenue as a gunman sprayed a hail of bullets, hitting at least four vehicles, sending restaurant patrons scrambling for cover and piercing the sense of safety and routine on the busy South Side street.
