Fork & Coin has opened at 3938 N Central Ave in Portage Park, calling itself an American izakaya — “the spirit of a Japanese izakaya,” brought to “the American neighborhood bar.” The restaurant grew out of a run of pop-up dinners led by founder and executive chef Drake, who spent more than two decades in professional kitchens before turning the concept into a permanent space with a dining room, bar and patio built for shared plates.
The menu runs through small and large shares built for the table: fried cauliflower, karaage chicken, five-spice chicharrones, fish and chips, a burger, curry ramen and grilled eggplant among the small plates, with koji hanger steak, miso cod, brined pork chop and a dish called GochuJawn as larger shares. Weekend brunch adds yeasted pancakes, baked French toast, a brunch burger and sando, shaken steak and eggs, and egg don. The bar pours sake, wine, beer and signature cocktails like the Orangepilled and the UTXO.
Fork & Coin also runs a supper club membership built around special tasting events, continuing the pop-up format the restaurant started from. More on the space, the people behind it and the full menu is on the restaurant’s website.
Fork & Coin is open Wednesday through Friday from 5 to 9 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; closed Monday and Tuesday. Check current hours and make a reservation at forkandcoin.com or via OpenTable before visiting.
