Mate & Company, an Argentine café at 2779 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Logan Square, is built around mate, the shared tea-like drink of yerba mate served in a gourd. The café describes the ritual as one of passing the gourd from hand to hand, and serves its Mate Experience in a traditional gourd alongside iced mate in mango, peach and passion fruit flavors.
The counter also runs a full espresso bar, with cortados, lattes, matcha, chai, cold brew and nitro coffee. From the Argentinian bakery case come medialunas, ham and cheese medialunas, facturas and chipá, and the kitchen turns out beef, chicken, ham and cheese, caprese and veggie empanadas, miga sandwiches, paninis, ciabattas, bagels, toasts and salads.
Later in the day the menu adds beer, spritz cocktails, an espresso martini and a wine list heavy on Argentine malbecs. Desserts include dulce de leche cake, tres leches, tiramisu and mini alfajores. The café also hosts a recurring Monday Mate gathering on Monday mornings.
