Electric Mud Coffee Bar Brings Dark Matter Coffee to Western Avenue in Logan Square

Electric Mud Coffee Bar sits at 1856 N. Western Ave. in Logan Square, inside a storefront marked by a glowing “MUD” neon sign and the shop’s name lettered across the window. It’s one of several Chicago coffee bars run by Dark Matter Coffee, the Chicago-based roaster founded in 2007, and takes its name and blues-inspired decor from Muddy Waters’ 1968 album “Electric Mud,” recorded in the city.

The menu runs through Dark Matter’s standard espresso lineup — cortado, macchiato, cappuccino, latte and mocha — along with drip, pour-over and press-pot coffee. Specialty drinks include an agave latte, cafe miel and a Mayan mocha, built on Dark Matter roasts such as the Unicorn Blood espresso blend, which the company describes as carrying notes of chocolate, lemon and nougat.

The space is dark-toned, with exposed bulbs, local art and blues on the stereo. A sign posted in the window advertises the shop as open every day, and the official site lists hours of 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week. More on the location, including hours and the full drink list, is posted at darkmattercoffee.com/pages/electric-mud.
