Hooligan has opened at 2528 N. California Ave. in Logan Square. The restaurant describes itself as a neo-Midwestern bistro rooted in Great Lakes ingredients and guided by classical French technique, an approach it calls “Third Coast Contemporary.” The dining room is à la carte and relaxed.
The opening menu runs from snacks such as dressed oysters with rutabaga and bbq spice, a chicken liver parfait with hot water cornbread and pimento cheese, and jambon et melon with city ham, to small plates including boeuf tartare, perch boudin and crevettes au vadouvan. Larger plates include a 400-gram butcher’s steak with sauce bordelaise and a half poulet rôti. There is a Kentucky paddlefish caviar service, a “Hooligan for Two” set menu, and desserts such as profiteroles and a local cheese plate.
The bar lists house cocktails such as “the hooligan,” made with brown-butter rye, amontillado and burnt honey, along with a short wine list that includes bottles from Chicago’s Middle Brow, beers by Marz and several zero-proof drinks. The restaurant adds an 18% service charge to every check in place of traditional tipping.
Tuesday and Wednesday evenings are reserved for private events. Menus, reservations and current hours are on hooliganchicago.com and on the restaurant’s Instagram, @hooligan.chicago.
