Defeat Smart Meters in Illinois

by admin on June 4, 2013

Sheila Hemphill and her son, Coleman Hemphill, on the dangers of smart meters and the legal strategy activists can use on a wide variety of issues. Curtis Bennett, Chief Science Officer, Thermografix Consulting, talks about expert testimony he gave on the health effects of smart meters.

BRADY — In October, the city council of this Central Texas town voted unanimously to purchase advanced electric meters, known as smart meters, for the city-owned electric utility. But some residents resisted, and the smart meter vote played a large role in last weekend’s recall of the city’s mayor and the electoral defeat of two council members. Voters here passed a referendum last weekend to enshrine in the city charter the right of residents to refuse the installation of smart meters on their property. Sheila Hemphill, an organizer of the effort, called the victory her “San Jacinto.” The reaction in Brady could signal a shift in the debate over smart meters, which collect detailed data on electricity use and transmit it to the utility using radio frequencies. A raft of bills were introduced during the legislative session that would allow individuals to keep their old meters for free, but all have faltered. Local resistance to smart meters, however, appears to be rising.

The Illinois legislature agreed Friday to allow people to carry concealed guns, which if signed into law would make the state the last in the country to allow the public possession of concealed firearms.

The compromise plan by the House and Senate followed a federal appeals ruling that stated Illinois’ concealed carry ban is unconstitutional and that the state must change it by June 9.

Gov. Pat Quinn, a Democrat, has not said whether he will sign the legislation into law. However, the bill has enough votes in the legislature to override a gubernatorial veto.

The person who may be responsible for more food-related illness and death than anyone in history has just been made the US food safety czar. This is no joke.

Here’s the back story.

When FDA scientists were asked to weigh in on what was to become the most radical and potentially dangerous change in our food supply — the introduction of genetically modified (GM) foods — secret documents now reveal that the experts were very concerned. Memo after memo described toxins, new diseases, nutritional deficiencies, and hard-to-detect allergens. They were adamant that the technology carried “serious health hazards,” and required careful, long-term research, including human studies, before any genetically modified organisms (GMOs) could be safely released into the food supply.

The Chicago Sun-Times this week laid off all 28 of its staff photographers, and has reportedly begun training its remaining reporters on “iPhone photography basics.” Media journalist Robert Feder first reported the news in a post to his Facebook page Friday, citing an internal memo from Sun-Times managing editor Craig Newman.

“In the coming days and weeks, we’ll be working with all editorial employees to train and outfit you as much as possible to produce the content we need,” Newman wrote in the memo, which Feder published in full Saturday morning. Newman goes on to highlight key areas of focus, including iPhone photography, “video and basic editing,” and social media.

The paper cut its entire photography staff on Thursday, including Pulitzer Prize winner John H. White. In a statement, the Sun-Times said the move was part of a broader shift, as the company focuses more on video and digital multimedia. Going forward, the company will rely exclusively on freelance photographers — an approach that’s common in magazine publications, but rare among newspapers.

ROB SCHULTZ | Wisconsin State Journal

State officials on Friday asked a Sauk County judge to send farmer Vernon Hershberger to jail for breaking conditions of his bail.

The state’s motion to revoke Hershberger’s bail cites a Capital Times report Wednesday in which the Loganville dairy farmer is quoted as saying he continued to sell raw milk and other farm products after the state ordered him to stop. The terms of his bail specify that he not sell or process dairy products without a license.

“It is a concern that any defendant would engage in and openly admit to actions which clearly disregard the court-ordered conditions of release (on bail),” wrote assistant attorneys general Eric Defort and Phillip Ferris.

Bee

The Illinois Ag Dept. illegally seized privately owned bees from renowned naturalist, Terrence Ingram, without providing him with a search warrant and before the court hearing on the matter, reports Prairie Advocate News.

Behind the obvious violations of his Constitutional rights is Monsanto. Ingram was researching Roundup’s effects on bees, which he’s raised for 58 years. “They ruined 15 years of my research,” he told Prairie Advocate, by stealing most of hisstock.

A Batavia High School teacher‘s fans are rallying to support him as he faces possible discipline for advising students of their Constitutional rights before taking a school survey on their behavior.

They’ve been collecting signatures on an online petition, passing the word on Facebook, sending letters to the school board, and planning to speak at Tuesday’s school board meeting.

Students and parents have praised his ability to interest reluctant students in history and current affairs.

CIRCUS CIRCUS DEBUTS AT THE DEN THEATER IN CHICAGO PREMIERE JUNE 7
A Uniquely Contemporary Look at the State of American Prisons

Circus Circus takes place in a world within our world. One that society is barely aware of, and one in which, even if you’ve never been there, have heard stories about. You will gain access to this world through our main character, Robert, immersed deep within the system.

Circus Circus follows Robert as he is arrested for marijuana and sent to Circus Circus State Penitentiary. Through Robert you will be exposed to the loss, degradation, and chaos that he is faced with on a daily basis, under the tight control of the spectacularly extravagant and wonderfully sinister, Warden Gordon. He allows you access because like any good ringmaster, Warden Gordon enjoys showing off. Robert sits patiently, locked up alongside violent offenders, child molesters, and rapists. Some of these offenders even have a shorter prison sentence than him, and it’s all because he was arrested for marijuana. This is the crux of the piece. The characters negotiate this tension, struggling against the realization that a non-violent offense may receive more time than a violent crime. The play explores what happens every day, though few understand its pervasiveness in the prison system. Every day this continues, our prison system continues to become over-crowded with non-violent marijuana offenders.

This is not a political, soap-box preaching, prison play or one heralding marijuana. This is Circus Circus. Based entirely on a true story, what makes this story even more compelling is how the story is told. Original music and video imagery complements the strong performances by writer Eric Welch, Robert Hatfield, Amber Hargroder. Marcus Funches, Craig James Jr., and Sean Childress. This talented group is joined by Inappropriate Theater Company members Jordan Shomer, Margaret Cook, Jaci Kay and Joey Galizia round out the cast in Chicago director’s George Robert Bailey’s first Chicago production.

This idiosyncratic and impressive Chicago debut premieres June 7th and will continue to run June 8th-9th, as well as the 14th-16th. The theater will host 7:30 p.m. showtimes and 3 p.m. matinees. Tickets may be purchased at the door or online at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/369755.

Critics and fans are already buzzing about Circus Circus. Yale University Professor and Alumni Sarah Lasley say’s “Circus Circus is entertaining, honest, and raw. It’s a one-of-a-kind play.” Like a true circus, the ladies and gentleman of Circus Circus have prepared a night full of entertainment, promising to dazzle, titillate, and captivate the audience. Are you going to the Circus?

al_bowmanAl Bowman Went from Limo-Driver-To-The-Stars to annual Awards Show producer. He shares his story on Welcome To The World with David Longoria airing on The 24k Music Network this week.

Al Bowman leads an interesting life. He enjoyed a career as a limo driver in Hollywood, driving many of the world’s top stars to award shows and other events. After chauffeuring a veritable A list of celebrities around in his limo, he moved on to produce one of the most successful regional entertainment awards shows, The LA Music Awards. And he did this right in the heart of Hollywood, where the competition is fierce. But that doesn’t phase Bowman. He says he’s on a mission. “Bill Gazzarri asked me to carry on as the Godson of Rock and produce a show celebrating the artists and the music for the Hollywood rock scene” Bowman explains, adding “I knew when he passed it was time to create a continuation of his great legacy in Hollywood.”

For those not familiar with the characters in the vintage Hollywood rock scene to which Bowman refers, Bill Gazzarri was a well known club owner, with an iconic venue in the heart of the Sunset Strip that bore his name. For decades, and many would argue, spanning the glory years of Hollywood rock, Gazzarri’s was the ultimate Hollywood rock club. Such top international rock legends as The Doors, Van Halen, Warrant, Guns n Roses and many more got their early starts on that stage. Bill Gazzarri was known for his implementation of the “Hollywood pay to play” system. The premise was that if your band wanted a 45 minute set to perform on a famous rock star stage at the club, you’d have to buy a minimum of 50 or 100 tickets to guarantee the time slot. Bands were encouraged to re-sell the tickets to fans, girlfriends, family members etc., at whatever price they could get to fill the standing room only audience area. Up and coming bands tended to get good at street level promoting, flyer-ing, marketing and organizing fans in order to ensure their success in the club.

In his final years, Gazzarri purportedly asked Bowman to create and produce an awards show featuring the best of the Hollywood rock and music scene.

And Bowman took that directive seriously. He started on a journey that took him from driver to TV and Awards Show Producer for what has become arguably the top Los Angeles regional music awards show. The show has been a successful annual event for the past 21 years, growing each year in many ways. “Our production has become a masterpiece, “says Bowman, adding “the timings have become like clockwork, and we really care that we do it the best of all the shows out there.”

24k Music Network’s host of their popular interview show Welcome To The World, artist David Longoria invited Bowman to tell his story. “Al has so much information he’s accumulated over the years, we had a lot of fun talking about it on camera”, Longoria said, adding “He had so much to talk about we decided to invite him back to hear more about his vintage experiences in the glory days of the Hollywood rock scene, and his experiences with The Godfather Of Rock (Bill Gazzarri).” Longoria spoke highly of the show saying “The LA Music Awards show has built a solid reputation over the years so bands and artists from all over the world are excited to participate every year.”

The guests and special achievement recipients are outstanding in Entertainment, sports and politics. They have even featured an award for a recent past US president, as well as famous gold medal Olympian.

To watch the episode of Welcome To The World with David Longoria and featuring guest Al Bowman, watch local listings or view it online beginning Friday at www.24kmusicnetwork.com . Video clips and archived shows are always available on the network’s youtube channel at youtube.com/the24kmusicnetwork .

Longoria and Bowman taped the episode last month at the Network’s studios in Studio City and it airs all this week on more than 450 TV and radio stations across the US and Canada.
