Will County

Radiation believed to be from the Japanese nuclear disaster has been found in Will County, state officials said today.

State emergency management officials emphasized that the radiation is at levels so low that it poses no risk.

“These findings are not surprising since traces of iodine have been identified in at least 15 other states,” Jonathon Monken, director of the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, said in a statement. “These levels are very low and present no hazard to people in Illinois.”

Radioactive iodine was found in grass clippings in Will County and in an air sample in Springfield.
