DETROIT— A Michigan attorney who claims the government had a role in the attempted bombing of a Detroit-bound plane could be called as a witness for the defense.
Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab (OO’-mahr fah-ROOK’ ahb-DOOL’-moo-TAH’-lahb) may call Kurt Haskell, who was a passenger on Northwest Airlines Flight 253 from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas 2009. Haskell’s name was disclosed in court Thursday by Anthony Chambers, an attorney who is assisting Abdulmutallab.
Haskell believes the bomb in Abdulmutallab’s underwear was fake. He claims the young Nigerian was escorted onto the plane without a passport and has a strong entrapment defense. Haskell is an attorney in Taylor, a Detroit suburb.

You know it’s tough out there for a P2P lawyer when even some random, anonymous, non-lawyer defendant is the more convincing party. That strange scenario unfolded yesterday in Illinois, where divorce-attorney-turned-porn-copyright-lawyer John Steele had his entire case against 300 defendants thrown out completely.
The case involved CP Productions, “a leading producer of adult entertainment content within the amateur Latina niche.” The company ran a site called “Chica’s Place” from which a bit of material referred to as “Cowgirl Creampie” was allegedly downloaded illegally by 300 people. Though based in Arizona, CP Productions signed up with Steele, a Chicago lawyer, to bring the case.
Judge Milton Shadur was clearly annoyed that the litigation has been taking up his docket space. Back on February 7, he issued a memo saying, “It is an understatement to characterize [this case] as problematic in nature.” Four months after filing, Steele had still not contacted all of the case’s defendants. The judge wanted to toss the case.

Battling a drunk-driving arrest, ex-Chicago Blackhawks star Chris Chelios won a key legal victory Wednesday that likely means the DUI charge against him will be dismissed.
Westmont police lacked probable cause to arrest Chelios following a Dec. 28 traffic stop, DuPage County Judge Cary Pierce ruled after viewing a 15-minute police videotape showing the Dec. 28 traffic stop and sobriety tests that led to the DUI charge.
The ruling clears the way for Chelios to formally ask that the DUI charge be tossed out — a request his attorney expects will be granted.
“The case is over,” said defense attorney Terry Ekl. “This video is as clear cut as possible that he was not impaired by alcohol.”

CHICAGO – The owner of a contracting company certified as a woman- and minority-owned business was indicted Thursday along with her husband and the firm on charges of collecting $9.6 million through fraudulent contracts.
The indictment charged that Aurora Venegas, 62, her Azteca Supply Co. and husband Thomas Masen, 57, were not the main suppliers of goods and services as required for contracts at O'Hare International Airport and elsewhere.
Instead, according to the six-count indictment, they operated the company as a broker or pass-through for supplies and services from other companies, in violation of their contracts. The indictment also alleged that Masen played a larger role in managing the company than would be appropriate for a woman-owned-and-operated business.
U.S. Attorney Patrick J. Fitzgerald issued a statement praising Chicago’s inspector general’s office for helping the FBI with the investigation.
